My Introduction to Typography (GDD-201-03) students created this type t-shirt, which are available for purchase from Cafe Press. Each student designed a clever letterform and I contributed the J. The project turned out to be fun, quick and rewarding.

Movie :: Son of Rambow
15 October 2008 · Leave a Comment
Willie, thanks for the nudge to get back to blog land. My latest inspiration comes from the movie Son of Rambow. The boys are just too clever and too darn cute. Their adventures remind me of the childhood fun my brothers and I used to have with our friends when we roamed freely along the bike path. We made up games, built forts (or tried to) and cruised on our bikes without helmets! I gotta say, being a kid in the 1970/80s was a blast. Anyway, check out movie (the DVD is out) — the 1980s soundtrack is a great bonus.

SUCCESS
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

China :: 888
8 August 2008 · Leave a Comment
888 License Plate, Beijing. In Chinese culture, the number 8 has an auspicious meaning because in Mandarin eight sounds similar to the word for prosper or wealth. People pay large sums to have lucky personal numbers — from phone numbers to license plates. While in Beijing, I wondered how much this license plate cost it’s owner? Remember to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremony, which will start today at 8:08:08PM in Beijing.

Good Magazine

Good Magazine, Issue 10. I’ve been a magazine junkie since I was a kid. Growing up, my Dad brought home stacks of magazines from work (he was a publishing wholesale distributor) – I dug the variety and different designs. Later, my college dorm room was wallpapered from floor to ceiling with cool print ads. My latest fave is Good Magazine – I came across issue 10 while en route to China! Check it out.

China :: Quake Relief Poster Entry
26 June 2008 · 1 Comment
Quake Relief Poster Entry. This is my poster submission for the Quake Relief Poster Exhibition (see my China :: Earthquake Relief post). It was refreshing to have complete creative control on the poster and t-shirt projects. The collage is a combo of trip photos (Stacey, my photo of the little boy is “clean” — happy to share if you want a copy
) and edited parts of two found images (I really wanted to include the “save” tent).

China :: Retrospective T-shirt
24 June 2008 · 1 Comment
AIGA China Retrospective, T-shirt Artwork. Our AIGA China Expedition group decided it would be fun to design t-shirts that reflect our trip experience or a political observation. My design (above) was inspired by a BBC News video clip I mentioned in my BBC :: Global View of US Presidential Candidates post.

Geez, it’s been a crazy week. I got slammed with client work and than my internet service was down. Anyway, back in blog land with a link to a new lecture series called Chinese Vistas. Seems like there’s insightful info about China all around me lately — must be the Olympic buzz. Good scoop. Check it out at:
